Career Opportunities are Available despite Disability

by Silas Reed
Disability generally causes an inability of a person to do some work. It is being regarded as a curse in society by many people around the globe. The Federal Government has taken many steps to improve the standards of all disabled persons by giving them opportunities in many government jobs. At present around 7% to 8% employees of the federal government are disabled.

The Americans with Disability Act (ADA) has forced many Federal managers to accelerate the hiring options for them. There are several options for hiring into careers related to the Federal Government. In competitive hiring options the disabled person has to go through a competitive exam where they have to compete with other disabled persons. The applicants contact the hiring agency directly. Once the process of exam is over, the agencies select the deserving candidates.

In time-limited Appointments the federal Government allows a minimum of a 60 day job to the disabled persons. The term appointment is given for a minimum of one year, but on the other hand should not exceed 4 years. Student Appointment Programs are directly available to the students, who pass all the criteria of disability. There are special seats for them which are reserved. Appointments under Special Authorities give the power to the manager to appoint despite the unavailability of accommodations.

It is very important for a person with disabilities to obtain certificates of their disabilities for any job. The certification can be provided by Departments of Veteran Affairs (VA) or State Vocational Rehabilitation Agency (SVRA). The certificates are prepared with the help of a counselor based on their job profile and disability factor. The certificate guarantees that the person will be able to perform his duties despite their disabilities. Also, certificates are not enough. There should be other reports like medical report and counselor's conclusion as support. The certification of a mentally disabled person requires the history of his mental illness and a report from a psychiatrist.

A person with more than 30% disability is provided more importance and support from the government. There is special power given to federal employer to hire these kinds of disabled people. Active military men with more than 30% abnormalities are given non competitive temporary appointments.

The Federal Government also provides a training program to the disabled persons. Disabled Veterans who are eligible for the training program may easily enroll themselves. Upon completion of the training the disabled veterans are given a certificate of training, containing information about the training program they have applied for and a grading on their performance. The agency can directly appoint any trained veterans. When federal agencies have hired some disabled veterans, they provide accommodations to them at their work place to make them comfortable and break the barriers so as to effectively and efficiently perform their duties.

There are many periodicals and journals which contain the job sources available from federal agencies. One can also browse through the internet and gather information about the different job sources.  All these facilities have raised the self esteem and confidence in people with disabilities.

Several years ago, I was in the midst of opening up various legal recruiting offices around the United States.  In my sheer enthusiasm for the business, I would bring new recruiters from around the country to Los Angeles and have them live with me for several months while training them in my method of recruiting.  The new recruiters would sit in my office and I would observe them recruiting and ...
