How to Become a Respiratory Therapist

by Silas Reed
Respiratory therapists are in great demand these days. Especially in the urban areas, where industrialization is continuously on the rise, a large part of the population is affected by pollution. Pollution has engendered various forms of breathing or respiratory problems among the youth as well beside the middle-aged and the old. This creates the need for a respiratory therapist.

Respiratory therapists evaluate and help to treat the breathing disorders like cardiopulmonary disorders. A respiratory technician cures disorders like asthma, fibrosis, lungs cancer etc. They also deal with newborns suffering from respiratory problems. Most therapists are associated with more than one hospital. Many work independently without registering with a clinical institution whereby they visit people in their houses in order to treat them and teach them how to use various medical instruments needed for recovery. Some people even work in rehab centers. A respiratory technician also works with companies that are into construction of this respiratory equipment. There are therapists who also conduct camps to teach various breathing exercises to people with a case of breathing problems.

At the high school level, you must take up subjects like biology, chemistry, physics, health care and mathematics to become a respiratory therapist. Various schools, colleges and hospitals provide 2 years training for respiratory therapy. An undergraduate degree in respiratory-oriented disciplines is necessary. You can contact the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) to know the recognized programs available in your city. The United States doesn't allow you to go for respiratory therapy jobs without a valid license. This license is provided by National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). You have to renew this license in every 2 years. To enhance your credentials, there is an exam offered by the National Board for Respiratory Care which is called the Registered Respiratory Therapy exam. If you clear this exam, you will stand a good chance of getting a job in a good hospital. If you specialize in a respiratory field like neurology, child care, or lung cancer, it will give you an added advantage.

A pulmonary technician is supposed to know the anatomy of the cardiopulmonary system by his finger tips. Different people have different causes of respiratory disorders. Some people have asthma as a hereditary condition while some others have it because of smoking habits. There are still others who might have asthma because of being in constant touch with fibers and related materials. So, as a pulmonary technician, you are supposed to find the cause of the same problem in different individuals. You should also be adept with handling instruments. This field requires many instruments to be dealt with and you should have talent with this equipment. This field requires good hand eye coordination and you should be able to work under pressure in case of emergencies. At times you have to deal with irritated patients and their family members about a long term respiratory illness. So it is essential that you develop interactive skills. Besides this, try to maintain above par GPAs as there is huge competition in this niche.

Almost all courses require aspiring respiratory therapists to spend a few hours working in a lab or at a hospital as an assistant. You can work in a pediatrics ward or intensive care ward or general ward dealing with general diseases like asthma and fibrosis. There is a special ward for lung cancer in many hospitals. You can even work there. Here you can learn various things like the setting up of ventilators, reading of parameters from monitors and other display devices, taking blood samples, monitoring patients, especially new born children having breathing problems, and administering treatments to patients under the supervision of a doctor. Once you have completed your education, try obtaining a job in a place where you have done your interns from or you can approach various hospitals, rehab centers, etc.

This is a very lucrative field. The average salary is between $40,000- $55,000 annually and it should increase with an increase in experience.

Respiratory therapists already have a great demand and this demand is going to surge. They get a chance to work in several high profile centers and rehab centers. You can also have your own clinic with a team of doctors working for you. Career growth is immense and with experience you can earn a handsome amount.
