Education: An Ideal Job for the Disabled

by Silas Reed
According to the World Health Organization, disability can be defined as any limitation, or impairment, which leads to restriction in participating in various activities. An individual can be called disabled if is unable to perform daily life activities normally. The normality norm and standards are set by society. The impurities can be physical, sensory, and cognitive or intellectual. A disability may occur during a person's lifetime or may be present from birth.

How to Turn Your Disability to Your Advantage?

Locating a good job opportunity for the disabled is a very onerous task. Many employers have some hang-ups about hiring disabled people for jobs, but people who are just physically impaired but have a sound mind are capable of doing various jobs. If a disabled person has a positive attitude, he/she has won half the battle. The individual should take up some vocational training, in any field of their choice, which will help them to find suitable employment. Computer training is a must, these days even the blind can use computer with the help of braille. In today's world where most of the jobs can be done through computers, which are disable friendly to a large extent, there is no reason for which a disabled person should not be hired for such jobs.

One should keep in touch with the government aided organizations and NGO's that provide employment opportunity for the disabled. One such organization is American Association of People with Disability. They can also take up some of the internship programs offered by various self-help bodies.

The government has job reservations for the disabled. So one can apply for these government jobs and they can get recruited if they fit well in the government prescribed criteria. The US office of Personal Management provides information on such jobs.

Awareness has to be created among employers that even the disabled have the right to employment, a right to earn their living. The employer and his colleagues might have to make some minor adjustments, but this is the least that they can do for humanity.

Education is an Ideal Field for Disabled Persons

A disabled person, who has acquired the required skills, is capable of teaching and training others including other disabled people. The feeling of empathy motivates them to share their knowledge and skills with others like them. We very often see that people with hearing impairment are also taught by teachers who are deaf or mute. The disabled can also teach in normal schools if his educational qualification permits him to teach.

Educational Requirements
  • A minimum of Bachelor's degree is required in the subject of interest, along with a course on Education or a course on Special Education.
  • A master's degree is an added advantage.
  • They should have the ability to communicate with the students.
  • Should have the ability to maintain records, including the student and the class record book.
  • Computer literacy is a must these days. The ability to work on MS Word is an advantage, and they can easily acquire it by joining vocational courses. They can also download various tutorials from the internet and learn through them.
Responsibilities of the Job

They have responsibility to meet new students, review their documentation.
Should coordinate with other faculty members on the campus to deal with various issues.
They should meet with students regularly to discuss academic problems and help them.

Earnings and Scope of Growth

The salary of a middle school teacher in the US is around $30,000 but this figure can go up to $60,000 depending on the individual's qualification, work experience and also the institution for which he or she teaches.

The field of education is ideal for the disabled as they can use their cognitive skills to for the betterment of the society. This not only boosts their self confidence but helps change perspective about disables in the society.
