The Education Department of the Yale Center for British Art (YCBA) is seeking a Curator of Education for School and Access Programs. Reporting to the Senior Curator of Education, in the Division of Research and Education, this position will cultivate and strengthen the Center’s relationship with New Haven schools and strongly advocate for the integration of the Center’s collections into K-12 teaching and special needs programs. This person will develop pedagogical and philosophical approaches that prioritize the needs of other-abled audiences. This position proactively supports special needs audiences of all ages by offering programs and making recommendations on the accessibility of museum spaces, installations, interpretation, and well-being areas. As the Center’s docents are the primary interface between the public and the YCBA, this position would be responsible for teaching and managing the docent training program. The YCBA, a public art museum and research institute, is a world leader in the study and display of British art and culture and is uniquely positioned to serve both public and academic audiences and as such this position will represent the University in the national and international museum community to share research and developments in K-12 and access programs.
This position manages and monitors the department’s annual budget, endowments, and grant finances with support of the department’s administrative assistant, and in conjunction with the Center’s Business Office. The post-holder will build upon and expand existing partnerships with schools by providing increased opportunities for visual learning. This post oversees existing programs that support visitor engagement with original works of art, including family programs, the summer teacher institute, our partnership schools program, community day, family film festival and summer programs for youth. By using the Center’s permanent collections and special exhibitions for teacher workshops and visual literary colloquia, educators will also learn how to adapt these techniques for the classroom. This position would be responsible for overseeing and managing the weekly docent training program. Docents play a major role in offering tours to all public audiences, covering special exhibitions tours, and assisting in all public programs. The post-holder would be responsible for setting the syllabus, scheduling guest speakers, teaching in the galleries, and vetting all tours, including special exhibition and enhancing observation tours. Training is rigorous and challenging to ensure the highest caliber of experience for all visitors. Access programs are available at the YCBA during the week and week-ends for special needs audiences, including Chapel Haven, a residential school in New Haven for adults with cognitive and social disabilities; and a weekend program called Artism for children between the ages of five – twelve who are on the autism spectrum. Like the docent program, this post-holder would be responsible for managing and teaching the program, while mentoring others to help grow the programs.

Strategizes and strongly advocates for the integration of a collection or collections into teaching across the Yale curriculum. 2. Conceives and oversees programs that support faculty teaching from original works of art, including faculty seminars, workshops, and study days. 3. Grows collaborative relationships based on teaching from the collection(s) with a wide range of academic departments and programs. 4. Conceives and facilitates object study sessions, working closely on specific faculty collaborations that support the interdisciplinary growth of academic affairs in ways that strengthen future partnerships. 5. Conducts preparatory research necessary to ensure best practices in how faculty use the collection with their students. 6. Collaborates with other museums and other collections at Yale for teaching purposes. 7. Collaborates with Education staff to develop a pedagogical and philosophical approach to teaching with objects and cross-disciplinary thinking. 8. Represents the University in the national and international academic museum community for the purpose of sharing research and developments in museum-based course collaborations. 9. Supervise departmental staff, including assigned fellows and interns. 10. Other duties, as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Master’s Degree in Arts, Art History, Education or related field and five years of professional museum experience in the areas of education or curatorial or an equivalent education and experience. Comprehensive knowledge related to one or more collection areas.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively. Demonstrated experience indicating comfort with public speaking in order to represent the YCBA through engagement such as professional conferences and seminars.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Demonstrated ability to think strategically toward the growth and development of educational and special needs outreach programs and develop effective collaborations between institutions and local communities.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Proven demonstration of excellent writing, grammatical and proof-reading skills and ability to compose effective written communications including grants. Writing samples including grant writing samples may be requested. Exhibit proven examples of excellent organization and management skills.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Demonstrated examples of ability to work independently and proactively. Demonstrate ability to self-direct and show initiative.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Experience working with special needs audiences such as children on the autism spectrum and special needs adults socially and cognitively. Previous experience including a high level of knowledge and expertise in the field of K-12 classrooms, art history, museum studies, or visual literacy.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Knowledge of Art History, Museum Studies, and needs of other-abled visitors for successful museum experiences.
