Duties & Responsibilities
The Center for International Development (CID) has an immediate opening for a Director of Strategic Engagement and Development to support the Center Director. The role is an extremely exciting opportunity to help grow Harvard's premier international development research center to further its vision of deploying the best talent available at Harvard and beyond to work on the most pressing problems facing the world today.

The director will work with and report to the (Faculty) Director of CID leading fundraising activities, strategic communications, and helping develop and support the overall growth strategy for CID. They will also work closely under the guidance of the Senior Associate Dean for Alumni Relations and Resource Development (ARRD) as well the Associate Dean for Office of Communications and Public Affairs (OCPA).

CID plans to expand the scale and scope of its work substantially over the next few years. By playing a critical role in this transformation, the position offers a unique opportunity for personal growth and fulfilment, enabling CID to catalyze sustained positive impact in the world - especially in places where and for people for whom it is most needed.

Three key areas of work expected: fundraising, strategic communication, and external strategy.
Fundraising: Work in partnership with ARRD, developing strategies, programs and initiatives to identify, cultivate and solicit major gift prospects; manage a portfolio of CID prospects and donors.
Work with ARRD to recruit and cultivate members of the CID Global Development Council (GDC); provide strategic guidance and support for the GDC.
Represent CID at meetings with donors, prospects and GDC members. This will require travel globally.
Work with ARRD to draft briefings, proposals and gift terms. Provide stewardship and reporting to major gift donors and GDC members.
Help plan, manage and lead strategic CID events such as GDC meetings and other fundraising related events.
Design and develop processes and standards to effectively monitor and analyze the effectiveness of CID fundraising and communications strategy and efforts.
Strategic Communication: Develop and implement media, external outreach strategic plan, and external and internal communications strategies that position CID, its faculty, affiliates, alumni and research favorably among key audiences.
Work closely with ARRD and OCPA to provide strategic, integrated marketing communication solutions in support of CID fundraising; develop content strategy and communications materials that support fundraising activities, including donor profiles, fundraising proposals, stories about CID's impact and event marketing materials.
Coordinate with OCPA on media outreach on major CID initiatives, gifts, and other announcements; represent CID in coordinating meetings for high-profile events and announcements.
Work with CID programs and faculty to develop technical and non-technical content showcasing the work of CID in service of the overall growth strategy and strategic plan.
Provide strategic communications guidance to CID Director, particularly on high-priority occasion-specific messages, speeches, and papers, and for social media.
External Strategy: Work with CID Director to develop and execute the strategic plan and growth trajectory of CID
Represent CID in external fora in support of the CID growth plan and strategy.
Identify and engage with external actors (donors, foundations, research centers, institutions etc.) and pursue joint collaborations.
Coordinate with CID research groups and their leadership, faculty, HKS and university counterparts to further overall growth strategy and strategic plan.
Other:
Serve as a key interface across CID's various stakeholders - including donors, external institutions/organizations, faculty, alumni, research programs, HKS senior leadership, and university counterparts.
Perform other responsibilities as needed.
Basic Qualifications
Masters and 5 years' experience or Bachelor's and 7 years' experience; 5 years of strategy, fundraising, marketing, communications and/or related experience required; diverse international experience also required.

Additional Qualifications
Preference for those with social science/international development background and/or a graduate degree in a related field. Must have major gift fundraising experience with a track record of soliciting and closing major gifts. Demonstrated experience in leading organizational growth and strategy, along with a demonstrated ability to think and execute strategically and critically; superior organizational skills, excellent writing, editing, oral communications, and interpersonal skills; ability to work across a diverse prospect portfolio; ability to multi-task and work in a dynamic team environment. Must have the ability to evaluate problems accurately and display good, sound, and confidential judgment. Must have the ability to innovate, think conceptually, and handle even difficult situations with calmness and professionalism. Must be detail and results focused; ability to work both independently and as a team member; proven ability to motivate, engage, and work with prospects and volunteers, university officials, faculty, and staff or similar constituencies. Must maintain a professional and caring demeanor and have a strong and tenacious work ethic. Experience with events management and knowledge of best practices; experience in developing marketing and communications initiatives; ability to travel domestically and internationally and regularly work evenings and weekends. An entrepreneurial spirit and a commitment to building a highly productive development organization; ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously and to develop and implement forward-thinking and creative strategies; experience working in a diverse portfolio of regions, especially Asia, Middle East, and Africa.
