Job Description Summary
Coordinates case management, daily operations, and record management of the WFU Behavioral Intervention Team (CARE Team) and Student Incident Team and works in collaboration with University and community partners. Additional activities include caring outreach to students and families experiencing crises, community education and outreach, assessment for CARE and Case Management, relevant special projects, and other general case management duties for the Office of the Dean of Students.
Job Description
Essential Functions:
Provides case management for students, faculty, and staff experiencing personal, medical, or mental health-related crises. This includes helping individuals become connected with on- and off-campus support resources, developing relationships with area hospitals to open communication between care providers in support of continuity of care, providing support to parents and families that travel to the community to support a loved one in crisis, communicating appropriately with all parties involved, and engaging in timely documentation.
Serves as a primary point of contact for WFU community regarding persons of concern and/or potential threats. In times of student crisis intervention, responds as needed, as part of an administrator on call rotation.
Provides ongoing development and provision of outreach education to the WFU community. Topics include the identification and referral of persons of concern as well as potential threats to the WFU community. Outreach to include undergraduate and graduate students is a vital component of outreach education.
Maintains case notes and provides accurate and thorough documentation of weekly CARE Team meetings, emergent concerns in Student Incident Team and Threat Assessment meetings, as well as activities throughout the week. Responsible for maintaining CARE system data and reporting.
Provides support for all CARE Team activities (e.g., weekly and ad hoc meetings, regular trainings on- and off-campus, regular review of Team process and protocols, annual retreat/strategy meetings).
Oversees assessment and benchmarking initiatives to improve CARE Team and Case Management functioning and reflect the complexity of the work, identify training and education needs for members of the community, and improve quality of care provided to students and families in need of assistance and/or experiencing crises.
Stays abreast of campus and national trends in the areas of behavioral intervention and threat assessment/management in higher education and is responsible for incorporating into training and routine system review.
Carries out special projects as directed by the Dean of Students.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Public Health, Human Services, or related field and three to five years of relevant work experience.
Ability to interact with students and parents of various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and work well in a team-oriented environment.
Ability to assess information regarding potential threats and/or persons of concern.
Ability to professionally and appropriately manage sensitive, private material and information.
Knowledge, experience, and comfort with mental health issues and symptoms.
Knowledge of risk and protective factors and warning signs related to targeted violence.
Ability to synthesize and summarize large amounts of information, document information electronically in a timely manner, and verbally communicate with appropriate stakeholders as warranted.
Ability to effectively communicate and develop partnerships throughout the campus and local community about area resources to constituency groups.
Skill in using technology to track and manage individual cases as well as assess and report on campus trends.
Knowledge of current regulations relevant to work in higher education (i.e., Title II, III, & IX; FERPA; HIPAA; etc.).
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Higher Education Administration, or related field.
Five to seven years of relevant work experience.
Experience with threat assessment in organizations, specifically in higher education a plus.
Accountabilities:
This position reports to the Dean of Students and Associate Vice President for Campus Life.
Supervises the CARE Case Manager and the Case Manager and Program Coordinator for Chinese Student Life.
