Job Class: Sign Language Interpreter Specialist Working Title: Sign Language Interpreter Specialist Who May Apply : Open to all qualified job seekers Date Posted : 07/22/2020 Closing Date : 08/11/2020 Hiring Agency/Seniority Unit : Human Services Dept / MAPE DHS Central Office Division/Unit : DHS-Central Office / DHHS Planners Work Shift/Work Hours : Day Shift/8:00am-4:30pm Days of Work : Monday-Friday Travel Required : No Salary Range: $22.48 - $32.79/hourly Classified Status : Classified Bargaining Unit/Union : 214 - MN Assoc of Professional Empl/MAPE FLSA Status : Nonexempt Connect 700 Program Eligible : Yes Job Summary Job Summary As a sign language interpreter you will provide sign language interpreting services to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Division (DHHSD) and other DHHSD metro-based staff; coordinate interpreting services requested for DHHSD metro-based staff; provide interpreting services and coordination of interpreting service needs for the Community Services Administration (CSA) and Department of Human Services (DHS) sponsored events. In this position you will also provide support services related to information, advocacy, recruitment, training and technical assistance regarding communication accessibility. There will be significant emphasis on the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of professional staff, service providers and consumers. Responsibilities Accurately and impartially interpret or transliterate spoken language into visual language and visual language into spoken language so that department and division-related information is accessible to all affected parties. Function as the expert on interpreting within DHS by providing technical assistance, information/referral, consultation and assistance to DHS divisions, other public and private entities, and individuals. Coordinate communication access coverage for DHHSD central office, metro based staff, CSA sponsored events and meetings, DHS sponsored events and meetings and assist other divisions that have employees who are deaf with developing policies and procedures for arranging interpreting services for day to day work Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Three (3) years professional sign language interpreting experience AND A four-year degree from an interpreter training program; must possess either National Interpreter Certification (NIC), or a Comprehensive Skills Certificate (CSC) by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or National Association of the Deaf (NAD) level 4 or 5 Experience must demonstrate the following: Must be fluent in American Sign Language and spoken English.
